Courtesy generally means a polite or respectful act. A courteous person knows when and how to talk. Courtesy means using your good manners. I’m sure that a lot of us know the five magic words: Please, Excuse me, Sorry, Thank you, and Pardon me!

Most of us know these words but we choose when to use them. How often do you use the word “Sorry” when you’re wrong? How do you say it? How some of us use these magic words alters their meanings sometimes. Sometimes, how your “SORRY” comes out can make you sound “NOT SORRY”.

Sometimes, how some people say “THANK YOU” makes it sound frivolous. No matter how insignificant a particular favor or act of kindness might seem to you, you should appreciate it to the fullest.

If someone sends 20,000 naira to your account, will you reply with only “THANKS”?

You won’t but if someone sends an airtime top-up of 200 naira to you, you’re suddenly too weak and tired to express maximum gratitude. Hence, you feel that “THANKS” is enough appreciation.

A lot of people miss out on favors because of their manner of showing or not showing gratitude.

Sometimes, I hear things like – “It doesn’t mean that I’m not grateful”. The receiver of your message is not God. Be expressive! Show gratitude to the fullest.

Some people only show gratitude when people give them money. If you are not one of the people who gives them money, you won’t get a worthy appreciation for the little things that you went out of your way to do for them. Sad!

I was privileged to hear a story of how a certain millionaire received 500 naira from someone during his mother’s burial. He was talking about what that 500 naira meant to him and how he appreciated the giver.

The giver didn’t have much. He was a poor man who just wanted to show care and I’m sure that he must have been shocked with the level of gratitude that he received. Now compare yourself to this man. He has funds in abundance but 500 naira meant so much to him.

Even if your problem is in the form of 1 million naira, you must show gratitude for one thousand naira given by someone. I pray that this will inspire change in someone.
